memory

If anyone ever claims that infants and toddlers don't have a long term memory, I'll take them on. Here's a case in point:

Kevin, our 18 month-old son, had not seen his grandfather ('vava') in over 4 months. As vava lives in Belgium, the last time he saw him was in July, when we visited Belgium for 2 weeks. The time before that was 6 months earlier, when we visited for Christmas 2004, so vava's not exactly an everyday sight.

Granted, I'd been showing Kevin pictures of the whole family, including vava, for a couple of weeks now, but no-one could have foreseen Kevin's response at the airport on Saturday.

When vava descended from the escalator, Kevin who normally is near his bedtime at this time of the day, ran to his grandfather shouting 'vava', 'vava' and jumped in his arms upon arrival. All the way to the car and on the way home, he continued smiling, pointing and saying 'vava', 'vava', 'vava'. He was the happiest boy on the planet.....now who says toddlers don't have long term memories? I hardly think he was happy because he recognized someone from a picture. He must have remembered his grandfather from 4 months ago, and 6 months before that. Regardless, I am thrilled he recognized my dad...and it made my dad's day too :-)
