The sun also rises

.....getting up late Sunday morning. Sun shining. Slight breeze combatting the touch of humidity in the air. Shower. Freshly baked croissant brunch. Flying kites with son & hubbie in local park. Fun with son on playground. Sitting on deck next to son splashing with sprinkler, waterhose and buckets. Comfortable belgian dinner of twice fried 'frietjes' with stovers. Glass of red wine....

...feels almost like the Ernest Hemmingway novel - 'the sun also rises'-...mindless, carefree wandering through the day, going through the motions, aimed purely at self-satisfaction....

...love the feel of it at times.... but couldn't imagine it day-after-day...too much isolation, too much selfishness, too little involvement...

Funny, that you mention you had a Belgian dinner on this nice sunday. I just had a similar experience, although here it was because our dinner was more about Belgian 'people' getting together for dinner than about the ingredients being Belgian...

But I surely envy those traditional Belgian fries you had... ;) (did you use Yukon potatoes?)

parboiling potatoes and then oven-baking them? I'd never heard that alternative. that's interesting.

I actually didn't prepare a whole lot of frietjes till last year, when I got a decent fryer. Now it's super easy. The secret is of course to double fry them, the real belgian way: first at ~ 150C and then around 190C.

I'm not sure what type of potatoes I used. I got the really large one that are for sale separately. That way, you can make really long, thick fries....makes me hungry again...
